Must-Learn
One thing success professionals have in common is their ability to listen. Research shows that, during conversations, most of us think ahead of the speaker in order to decide what to say next. Effective listeners think along with the speaker in order to respond to what isn't said as well as to what is said.
Every message is comprised of two parts: message and relationship. What to focus on it and when to focus on it, is key.
Learn-On-Need
For example, I was consulting with a group of people about qualities and elements of what learning is and what effective learning looks like. I had my notes and outline ready to go. However, once the conversation began it was quite apparent that this group had interpersonal relational issues that went far deeper than effective was to engage learners. I had a choice: Do I continue with my outline and content or do we deal with the issues impacting the team? I set my agenda aside and worked through moving the group closer to a shared vision of what they were trying to accomplish – the right move in this case. While I was able to weave in elements of my agenda, it was far more important for the employees to work through foundational issues impacting their group.
